Inspired by Henry Ossawa
Tanner
Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 –
May 25, 1937) was an African-American artist. He was the first African-American
painter to gain international acclaim.
He began his career as a painter of scenes of plantation life. In 1891, discouraged by the racial prejudice
in the United States, he moved to Paris, where he spent the rest of his
life. In Paris, he painted many large
scenes of Biblical subjects. These won
him wide acclaim in Europe, but little recognition in the United States in his
lifetime.
