Honoring Matthew Henson

Matthew Alexander Henson
(August 8, 1866-March 9, 1955) was the first African-American Artic explorer, associate of Robert Peary on seven voyages over a period of nearly twenty-three years. He served as a navigator and craftsman, traded with the Inuit and learned their language. Henson claimed that he and the expedition's Eskimo guides reached the North Pole on April 4, 1909, an hour before Peary. They were the first people to stand on top of the world. He wrote about his feat in the book A Negro Explorer at the North Pole. In 1937 he was invited to be a member of the Explorers Club due to his achievements and was the first African-American to be accepted.
