Claudius "Claude" McKay (September 15, 1889 – May 22, 1948) was a Jamaican-American writer and
poet, who was a seminal figure in the Harlem Renaissance. McKay
first won acclaim in the United States for his widely published protest poem,
“If We Must Die”. He set many of his
short stories and novels in African-American communities.
